In achieving a sustainable future, the building sector needs to move towards a circular economy.For an industry to be in the circulation mainly depends on its value of the materials within. Waste comes when it’s considered worthless and the valuable ones are recycled. An increased value equals less waste. Hence, what BAMB is all about. To increase the values of building materials.In a circular economy, BAMB will enable a systemic shift incorporating buildings designed dynamically and flexibly making its materials sustain their value in its economic chain. As the materials on buildings being regarded as potential waste, they act as banks of valuable materials hence, slows down the usage of earth resources.ToolsTwo methods have been developed: Materials Passports and Reversible Design – supported by new business models, policy propositions and management and decision-making models that is to be demonstrated and refined from a 6 pilot projects.Materials passportsOne of the ways to recover materials effectively is to provide the right informations to be access publicly as it will be vital for their selections in their next usage. The electronic Materials Passports developed in BAMB is to be a one stop for material information being a sets of data that describes the characteristics of materials in products which maintains their value for recovery and reuse. With the template given, it will be a support materials choices in Reversible Building Design projects.Reversible Building DesignFor a more effective recovery of the materials,products and its components the buildings need to be easily reversible to adapt to the flexibilities of the material selections. A design protocol for dynamic and circular building will be developed in enabling different stakeholders in the construction value chain to implement the strategies on the refurbishing activities. A method that can easily be deconstructed, or where parts can be removed and added easily without damaging the building or the materials. Resource efficient maintenance, repair as well as flexibility in the use of space and systems.SocietyThis will invite the parties involved to be more aware of their role in the contributions towards the circular economy. For instance, the Materials Passports create the incentives for suppliers to produce healthy, sustainable and circular material and building products that indirectly expands the business jobs opportunity in a more systematic way. Moreover, this will also ease the developer, managers and renovators to choose healthy, sustainable and circular building materials.
